Dear Chicago Public Schools Families,

With the holidays approaching, our city will once again host a variety of events and activities to celebrate the holiday season. Many of these events—including the Millennium Park Tree Lighting Ceremony on Friday, November 18—are taking place downtown. Our District encourages students and families to take part in these festivities, and we also encourage you to review the following safety guidelines with your children if they are planning to participate.

  • Before they head downtown for a holiday event, we encourage you to have a conversation with your child. If you are not joining them, make sure you know where they will be, who they will be with, how you can reach them, and how they will get home.
  • If students are going to an event with friends, they are encouraged to keep their group small and are expected to reflect our District’s core values of integrity, leadership, and respect for others.
  • If your child ever feels uncomfortable or threatened while downtown, they should go to the nearest business or populated area and call for help. While having a phone can help, students should use their phones with good judgment and be aware of their surroundings.
  • While masking will not be required to attend a holiday event downtown, students are encouraged to wear a mask to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other airborne illnesses.

Thank you for your partnership in helping us keep our students safe. We wish all of our families a very happy holiday season.

Sincerely,

Chicago Public Schools
